Our fish is mistaking it for food!
Descinerating plastic: The plastic decomposes yet, never entirely disappears. This spot in our ocean's great pacific is called the 'garbage patch'. This garbage patch is an area off the coast of California all the way to China. This covers surface area as large as the United States. This strange phenomena is caused by a series of currents in the Pacific ocean causing this circulating effect pulling debris from the California current, the Asia (Kuroshio current), and the North Equatiorial Current. The trash is collecting in this body of water and Birds and fish are mistaking this plastic as food.

The Knowledge of Healing

A 1997 swiss documentary visits with the Dalai Lama and his personal physician, Tenzin Choedrak, in his home in the foothills of India, as well as with Tibetan doctor Chimit-Dorzhi Dugarov in eastern Siberia. In addition to interviews with physicians, scientists and other practitioners in Austria, Switzerland, and Israel.

The movie takes us through a spiritual journey, revealing the 2,000 year-old art of Tibetan medicine.We watch, the Dalai Lama's Doctor, Tenzin Choedrak, traveling through India's rural towns treating patients. He handles them with much love and listens to all they have to say. He reassures them he has a treatment. Quite a loving process and a beautiful soul to witness.

Now, Please don't mind me, as this post is going to seem too long & much too detailed. This blog as much as it is just a hangout for me, i also like to write things that can be used as a reference for myself and maybe someone else as well.

Tibetan Medicine History:

The knowledge of Healing, 7 Gyuschi, written in the 11th century, is the Tibetan Medical Fundamental text.

Fast forward to the 17th Century, under the reign of the 5th Dalai Lama, Desi Rinpoche wrote this medical treatise. Of the 1600 illnesses described, 18 belonged to the future, and would develop as the environment changed.

The Story:

Most of the movie has us follow Doctor Tenzin Choedrak, as he gives us lots of fascinating insights into the way a Tibetan doctor practices medicine. His following saying was my personal favorite. In a rough translation, he says, the patient is responsible for the cause, and the doctor is responsible for treating the disease.

Much like and maybe within the same vein as acupuncture and other meridian based medicines, he explains that there are three main vessels. The first main channel goes up from the navel to form the brain. Another channel goes down from the navel forming the sexual organs, where desire reigns. Lastly, the main channel, the channel of life, is bonded to blood and as he describes 'reigned by hate'. These are the three most important channels. Altogether there are over 24,000 channels.

Always first feeling the patients pulse, I watch him and his medical team go about creating what he calls a glue. In this particular case, he uses a garlic preparation. They apply the garlic onto the ailing body part, and light it with a match. While doing so, softly rapidly chant Tibetan mantras and prayers.

We next see him visit a patient where the treatment involves applying a burning rod to designated spots. One instruction given to the patient was not to drink any cold water. (this is another example of the importance of whether we drink something hot, cold, or room temperature). I'm sure all three have a specific application depending on the energies of your body perhaps.

He visits and treats another patient with a malignant mestasis on his kidney, that has developed too far along in the disease process, and told he was inoperable. With blood typically in his urine, and terrible pain, he holds out his last hopes at recovery by having Tenzin Choedrak treat his condition.

Another girl has a spinal injury caused by a motor vehicle accident leading the car to flip over into the air. She has tingling still in her legs, yet, is not able to use her fingers, nor legs.

An older man with Heart Disease had so much damage, he too could not be operated on, he claims to have taken Padma 28, Garlic pills, and Chervil plant extract, and ten years later completely healed and did not need surgery after all.

The last movie's story was probably the most horrific. A Tibetan girl protesting the Chinese government beaten and tortured. Continuous electric shock. Beating her everywhere with Batons and using the batons to rape and sodomize. Causing nerve damage in her skull. Absolutely terrible. She was so cool and nice. Well, the doctor says, You are here and will now receive treatment. He tells her she must not worry. And tells her she must get well and that the mind is very important. When the mind is at rest, that helps the healing. We later see her go to a more industrialized pharmacy than previously shown in the movie.

The movie ends with showing us the healing effects the medicine had for each patient. The Dalia Lama explains, while disease is perhaps a part of being human, we can chose to suffer and to view life as longer than this one life time.

Eastern Science:

Practicing Tibetan medicine has certain modalities. For example, the doctor uses the right hand and takes the patients left. With his index finger feels the heart & small intestine. With the middle finger he feels the spleen and the stomach. With the ring finger he feels the reproductive organs and the left kidney. With the index finger, he feels the lungs and the large intestine. With the middle finger, he feels the liver and the gall bladder. With the ring finger, he feels the right kidney and the bladder.

The 12 pulses and the beat characteristics of the vital and hollow organs, resemble the waves of an ocean. It is the wind that drives the waves in our oceans and in the human body it is the wind in our system that determines our waves. We can feel the waves through pulse. This idea of wind. the idea of our life force.

There are three different things in the body: movement, heat, and fluids. Wind is responsible for all that moves in the body. Bile is based on the element of fire. It represents the body's heat. Phlegm is based on Earth and Water and corresponds to the body's fluids.

Western Science:

It is normally held that electromagnetic waves exist, the dispersion of light in waves, but, within the limits of the quantum theory, they are light quantums at the same time these light quantums are counted in particles. Using biophotographic measurements of the ingesting cells. (the ingesting cells are white blood corpuscles). Next adding an extract from a tibetan herb (Padma 28) and observing the light emission of these ingesting cells.

This science is known as phytochemistry. The light emission and absorption contributed from the chemical reactions involved. Looking closer at the reaction, they witnessed two admissions. One emission is the resting period, when the cells are dormant. Once the extract is added, the intensity of radiation is increased. However, once the ingestion stage begins when nourishment is added, the emission weakens due to the addition of the plant extract. The fact that there are two phases, two levels of activity. That the body is benefiting from the jump start provided by the substance and the substances change in frequency as a further mirror to our own bodies physiological functions. wow, kinda deep.

Tibetan doctors have found the very combinations to send this impulse. First the illness has to be understood, than comes the targeted intervention. With the target of treatment is to send out this electromagnetic pulse (whether they understood it in this exact scientific term or not).

The way they target the pulse is through their herbs, roots, and flowers. A skilled medicine man combining tastes and smells, compounding them into one mixture, to be administered to the patient, with the organism (us) translating this impulse to become healthy. This is a very different approach from the West.

Another very popular concept in chemistry is the free radical. Our cells are constantly under oxidative stress and additional stress from toxins, certain metals that literally once introduced into the cell creates damage much like combustion from a car engine. Because the herbs, roots, and flowers are also very high in antioxidants, therefor serve as a great barrier of protection. Very important, for example, in vascular diseases.

Homeopathic Medicine:

Tibetan medicine looks at potency, the 5 elements of earth, and taste as the identifying reason for it's contained medicinal properties. The 8 potencies used for healing are: heavy, oily, cool, blunt, light, course, hot, and sharp. The six areas of taste are composed of two elements respectively, Earth/Water, Fire/Earth, Water/Fire, Water/Wind, Fire/Wind, and Earth/Wind. So, each herb, root, flower will consist of these five elements in these 6 different combinations. Lastly, we have the 6 different tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, hot, and tart.

The idea as to why there is a benefit for homeopathic therapies vs. pharmaceutics is that the plants active ingredients are only available in small quantities vs. chemically creating a specific influence that by doing so, often its effects and side effects interfere with the body's function. Because the plants active ingredients are not overpowering to the body, any side effects they may have diminish and the plants are well tolerated.

When creating their formulas, the doctors have a very interesting selection process. After examining the patient, the doctor now looks over the pictures of various herbs through illustrated manuals. The movie shows the Dalai Lama's doctor (for some reason) going into a dark room and looking with his flash light at pictures seemingly painted on the wall. I can't help but wonder if it was to protect the color of the drawings in those instances, yet, unfortunately i did not pay much attention. Although I was paying much more attention to the actual practicing of medicine, still Very Cool to see. It seemed to give you a birds-eye view of practicing medicine as if in a Tibetan Monastery.

The selection includes items that will help the organ and assist with the other organs as well. These medicines have specific requirements for bringing their full healing potential. Very important for medicine to be effective it must be grown in a non polluted environment.

We watch them going out into the field to select herbs and than upon bringing them back create the correct mathematical dose, crush with Tibetan devices, and than sift, and lastly stir. From there each portion is wrapped in a swatch of paper twisted much like a hershey's kiss.

Now, in order to make Jewel pills (i.e. Danjor & Mangjor), you need gold, silver, copper, iron, lead, brass, and many other elements. These are the 8 main features, 4 secondary aspects, and 8 irons. This procedure is extremely difficult. It requires decontamination followed by distillation and calcination. For example, gold takes 54 hours to smelt, silver 10 hours, a certain amount of time to smelt iron, etc.

I've created a list of all the herbs, roots, flowers they used during the movie's treatments. Although, the movie described the medicines as 35 different constituents along with healing plants, herbs, and fruits. I want to stress- This in no way indicates that this list should be used for any type of treatment purpose. It is simply interesting to use this information for research purposes.

Tibetan Pharmaceuticals-
MYROBALAN- considered a crucial ingredient in most Tibetan medicines.
The idea that most of the raw drug taken from plants will not work with out it. The explanation for why this is so comes from the plant possesing 6 different tastes.
GARLIC- can kill germs, extract poison.
COPPER SULFATE- It disintegrates tumors and malignant tumors, cure herpes simples, and eye disease.
FIBRO FERRITUM- It heals septic wounds and disintegrates tumors.
REALGAR- It subsides swollen glands and heals chronic infected sores.
TURQUOICUM- Treats inflammation in the liver
CORAL- Cures nerve disorders due to damage in the brain, necrosis & other inflammation in the liver, and due to poisoning.
PADMA 28- cleanses the blood vessels.

Introduced to West:

Tibetan medicine introduced as a supplement to western medicine. Brought through manufacturing, interestingly, the formulator must taste the formula. It is impossible to create without doing so. And yet, as practiced with western supplemental and pharmaceutics, they too verify with spectroscopic equipment.

Spraying Sandalwood essential oil brings me back to the feeling of Ancient Greece & Rome. It is so deeply sensual feeling that Tantric yoga uses it to awaken the 'sexual energy'. (interested now?).
The use of the wood goes back 4000 years with caravans carrying this wood from India to Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Many temples were built from the wood and the Egyptians used the oil in embalming.
The Sandalwood trees are almost extinct and now it is rarely used for anything other than extracting the oil. Two brands i particularly like are Oshadi & Simplers.
The way i typically use it, is by mixing it in a glass hydrosol bottle. If it is difficult to find a dark glass spray bottle, try looking for a skin care line that uses these types of bottles. I've done this with Evan Healy's skin care line. If you mix the essential oil with oil than a mixing bottle will work. I've found this bottle typically sold at health food stores with the flower essences.
There are some reported health benefits as well.
It is harmonizing and has a calming, tension relieving, and clarifying effect. This makes it great for relieving feelings of depression, hectic lifestyles, feelings of fear, stress, nervousness, and anxiety.
Because it has a pronounced effect on the mucus membranes of both the pulmonary as well as genito-urinary tract - it is great for soar throat and general chest complaints, and has been shown to be very effective for complaints of the urinary tract as well.
On the skin, sandalwood oil relieves itching and inflammation , and is most effective in relieving dehydrated skin - making it great for anti-ageing skincare - and the astringent action is a great skin clarifier as well. I also like to spray it into my scalp and hair.

Boston's Downtown Filene's Basement GONE...What a shame!!!

I travel into the city to buy some new nike free sneaks and get my bangs trimmed (pictures shown). i got off at downtown crossings to go to my favorite vietnamese restaraunt, pho pasteur, and what do i see???? the entire filene's building ready to be demolitioned. Filene's and most importantly Filene's basement was certainly one of the 'City of Boston' DESTINATION spot. Too many europeans would stop me on the street to ask for directions to the 'basement'.

And do you know who is to be blamed??? MACY's. Located directly across. Once the company that owns Macy's bought out all Filene's, the city of Boston told them one had to go and they chose to tear down Filene's. Honestly, I think it should have been the other way around.

My first shopping trip ever into the 'big city', my dad brought us to Filene's basement. I remember women changing in between the bins filled with clothing. Later in life, moving to Boston on my way to school, the gym, or work meant passing by the basement or even wanting to kill a few hours before an appointment. That was the place!!

The best part of shopping there was the discount process. Every item that came into the store was dated. I think it went on sale for 25% after the first 2 wks. or a month on the sales floor. The following wk that same item if still on the sales floor would go down to 50% off and than the following wk the item became 75% off. It was too much fun figuring out the status of each item. Turn over the tag. look up at the billboard indicating the discount schedule. Ok so this item says 6/01. Todays date 6/22. (let's use the 2 wk. time frame for first sale). And perhaps my fondest memory was a good friend of mine, who has long since left the state. She had went to Fashion Institute of New York and so as you might be able to imagine had great fashion flare. I didn't mention part of what makes filene's basement great is all the vault items (basically all the clothing shipped from barney's, saks, etc.). Well, my friend, was Mrs. Filene's basement. She lived not even a mile away in beacon hill, and was probably at filene's basement practically every morning as they opened their doors & she WITH OUT A DOUBT spent all her time hiding shit and looking for the shit she hid the day before!!

Getting in Shape Increases Fat Utilization

I'm starting yet, another new category. There are so many positive physiological adaptations to exercise & I want to begin categorizing them.

Our muscles enzymes responsible for burning fat diminish rapidly without exercise, while our muscles always maintain available sugar enzymes.

I read this years ago in a Covert Baily book "Smart Exercise". He titles the chapter "Fat People are Sugar Burners". Very fascinating, when we work out (and become fit) our muscles responds by utilizing our circulating fatty acids in preference to sugar supplying our bodies fuel.

Now, to get a better picture, at rest we burn about one calorie per minute (yes that figure varies). From that one calorie the ratios of fat to glucose is 70% fat & 30% glucose (an elite athlete usually 4:1). Now, this is without exertion. If you decided to go out for a run, your muscles,if unfit, would not be able to handle the intensity and the result would be to quickly go into the anaerobic system, where your muscles would burn mostly sugar and not fat. This explains an unfits person's lack of stamina during exertion and probable ravenous hunger afterwards.

The trick for anyone out of shape is to not exert yourself too intensely at first, and allow the bodies physiology to build these enzymes. I would not suggest the 'fat burning zone' method. I feel this approach is resorting to a simplistic training method for the unfit individual to achieve fat burning. Yet, if someone is easing into their fitness routine, there will be a natural transition into becoming more fit. we just need to be patient. Once the persons body becomes more efficient, they will find they will be able to handle training in high intensity followed by recovering at a lower intensity.

These are my reasons: First I suspect that the person will not get in better shape if they are trying to "tone it down" in order to be in a fat burning zone. I also believe this type of training does not bring into consideration hormonal factors involved with extended low levels of stress.

So, anyhoo, this is my opinion and I could be proven wrong. My theory is that as your body gets all of the physiological benefits related to being in shape, if we allow for the natural physiologic progression of better fatty acid utilization.

For anyone who likes to know the why behind a theory. Research is showing that physical activity improves the enzyme function in the following way. (There's probably a lot more involved as well). A little bit of the science involved:

exercise-induced increases in fatty acid oxidation occur as a result of an increased ability to transport LCFA into mitochondria.

Recently, fatty acid translocase (FAT)/CD36 was identified on mitochondria isolated from rat and human skeletal muscle and found to be involved in LCFA oxidation. & regulated by carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPTI) activity and the content of malonyl-CoA (M-CoA).

decreased CPTI M-CoA sensitivity and increased mitochondrial FAT/CD36 protein are both important for increasing whole body fatty acid oxidation during prolonged exercise.

Lorraine Hansberry achieved with this screenplay what great literature does best. It gets at the very core of the driving force of society. It also reveals the psychology of being 'human'.

The 1959 screenplay touches on a white society that thwarts the black races hopes for equality and prosperity. The family is living in a Chicago projects for blacks in a time where the law said no segregation yet potential violence and lack of opportunity kept segregation alive. We follow the families efforts at education, creating a sustainable income, and buying a home for themselves.

What I found particularly interesting about this story is that the issues faced by a black family during the times of a still physically segregated America, are the same issues still relevant in this day and age, yet with racial inequality no longer tolerated, shows itself to be the issue it really was all along. A class issue. This has always been the case, dating back to serfs and feudal lords and perhaps even before. And in fact as the organization of society grows, we find more and more rights and human opportunity are taken out of our hands and decided by someone else. As this story reminds us, all societies show a certain amount of assimilation to an oppressive system, learned helplessness from the enormity of societal issues and bureaucracy, the illusion and/ or disillusion of opportunity, and yet, the prevailing spirits of all people who live on a dream. Never giving up hope.

Well, back to the play. This conversation stood out to me: Walter is talking to his mother a women who herself worried about getting lynched and moving to the North where blacks were given freedom.

Mama: Son- how come you talk so much bout' money?
Walter (with immense passion): Because it is life, Mama!
Mama (quietly): Oh- (very quietly) So, now it's life. Money is life. Once upon a time freedom used to be life- now, it's money. I guess the world really do change...

visiting my hometown today, although we have been many times, i always direct my boyfriend at least 6 different ways, mostly because i love my hometown and just want to drive through every bloody street thinking about friends, runs, bike rides, you name it. So, anyway, on our way back to the highway, i forget to tell my boyfriend to turn, and tell him he was supposed to take that left. he asked if he should turn around and my response was oh well, we can take another left up the road, yet, it has a lot of really tough turns.

So, my funny guy starts to pretend every curve in the road is demanding all of his effort to steer. i'm laughing so hard. he's saying lions and tigers and bears oh my & wiping his brow to indicate that was a close one.

THIS was the hair cut i wanted. i had cut it this way inadvertently years prior. yet, didn't have the heart to tinker around and most likely f' it up anyway. the closest pic i had at the time was the heidi clum's Elle cover. at this time i had blogged about getting my hair cut here and here

I brought this pic to a local hair dresser. i decided that i would switch hair dressers for someone next to my house. i figured with regular bang trims it would be easier. we had our consultation, he said he knew the style & proceeded to give me a shag only fit for a dog (very 80's- all wisps curl into your face- yuk!). My boyfriend immediately tried to create fringe although the hairdresser had thinned out my bangs right at the moment i said that works. probably just to piss me off. A day later i just chopped my long hair and than a few months later chopped it practically to my ears.

coincidently, recently that same crapola hair dresser ruined a friends hair at the tune of $400. He actually charged her to re-work the color & still left it an orange hot mess. I had thought she had colored it herself and had to bite my tongue from suggesting a toner-STAT.

Well, tonight while staying up WAY too late web-surfing, i stumbled upon the above pic. I have decided at this very moment to grow my hair long again & with my original stylist ( evolved out of the 80's) working with me, we will get my hair retro shag eventually.

i never go to the doctor. Yet, transferring colleges i was required to get a physical a bunch of immunizations etc. my state's insurance policies have changed and now even if you are not a full time student, you still need insurance. my job has healthcare. so, rather than get suckie school insurance. i signed up. so, now i have a primary care doc. and she wanted to do EVERYTHING. As she worded it, "You are now a women. A women your age must start to consider things". Oh no! soon they will be telling me to get a colonic and insist i get mammograms. i know. i know. better to check. So, anyway, i just got my results and my vitals were perfect. Everything. Yay!!

interesting huh?

well, i was first exposed to the squatting toilet during my visit to Algeria. Most toilets had the toilet bowel, i did have the opportunity to use the toilet pictured at the left. AND, funny thing, i noticed my poo just slid out. no feeling of pushing. i felt like a doggy, yet, i did notice it felt GOOD.

This is the lay down:

* while squatting our colon is able to straighten out, and the poo is easily expelled. The problem with sitting on a toilet seat, is that while in a seated position, the colon does not allow for elimination at the beginning of our large intestine (cecum). This prevents some of the fecal matter from leaving the top of our colon, *think of situations that would lead to appendicitis. Furthermore, while sitting, our colon becomes curved at the Sigmoid colon and this clogs at the point of exit *think of situations that might cause impaired detoxification, hemorrhoids, diverticulosis, & other bowel disease.

Originating in Spain, this cheese is made from a combination of cow, goat, and sheep's milk. It's taste is mild with very slight notes of tangy and buttery. If I compared it to a cheddar, I would just take out the bitter notes. It's a great snacking cheese. A few bites with some tea or wine. the cheese is ok at melting, like a cheddar cheese, i would finely grate this cheese.

I'm looking for a picture of a possum with a very ugly man face. It had no fur on it's face. Just very distinct eyes, nose, and mouth with fatty furrows to make him look as though he had many grumpy thoughts. Almost as if he would teach you a lesson for even making eye contact. From that day forward, i was convinced, we're not all god's creatures. Funny enough a veterinary friend knew exactly what i was talking about and made the exact face.
